Laugh With the Moon
by Shana Burg
Thirteen-year-old Clare learns that she can do without most of the luxuries she enjoyed in the United States. What she is struggling to do without is her mother, who died suddenly. Now, Clare and her father must cope with this heavy loss and find life’s purpose. A former Peace Corps volunteer, her father returns to a village in Malawi, Africa to work as a mission doctor and brings Clare along.
For the next year, Clare must live as the locals do and this includes going to school. There, she meets Memory, a young African who is wise beyond her years. Together, the girls solve everyday problems, which are quite funny at times, and face a new heartbreak head on. Only Memory can teach Clare how to laugh with the moon.
Told from Clare’s perspective, this story teaches that death can teach us how to live because love endures forever. 5th – 8th grades.
