Molly and Michael are about as excited to move to a church in the country as they are having evil Heather as their new sister. They already hate the idea of moving away from Baltimore and their friends, but now they have Heather, their sinister stepsister, to take care of. Heather always gets her way by tattling and lying. Dave, their stepdad, and Jean, their mom, always side with Heather, mainly, because they feel sorry for her. Heather witnessed her mother dying in a house fire when she was only three. One day, while exploring, Molly and Heather discover a graveyard. In the graveyard, they find a small tomb by itself, marked with the initials HEH. Soon Heather becomes obsessed with the tomb. She talks about her new friend, Helen, the ghost of the tomb. She tells Molly and Michael that when Helen comes they will regret ever being mean to her. Molly soon realizes that Helen is very much real and dangerous. She knows she must protect Heather, but doesn’t know how to get through to her. Molly’s life is falling apart, and just when she thinks things can’t get any worse, they do…when Helen comes.
I really enjoyed the plot. The way that Heather was so hateful towards Molly and Michael, and the icy soul of Helen gives me the chills. I thought that the author did a fantastic job of foreshadowing. A great example of this is right when you think everything is fine, the characters get sucked right back into Helen’s trap!
If you’re ages 11 – 13, and you’re someone like me who loves ghost stories and mysteries, then you should definitely check out this book. Even if you aren’t a big reader, you will find yourself making time in your schedule to read this book. It’s not a waste of your time. I think that you will be shocked by the change of heart in the end and all the baffling details throughout the story. I love this book so I give it *****.
