Milkweed is an outstanding book about an orphan boy, who doesn’t know his own name, living through the Holocaust. He would hear bombs, guns shooting, and jackboots with their dogs barking and screaming at the Jews. He would run around stealing bread from other people because he has no money.
He is given the name Misha by a boy, Uri, who befriends and protects him. Misha’s new family becomes a group of abandoned orphans living on the streets of Warsaw. Misha is innocent and naive. The Nazi’s invasion bring horrors ahead but poor little Misha sees the “Jackboots” as something cool or wonderful. Misha lives with with his friends behind the Warsaw ghetto. Misha finally realizes that being a Jew can be dangerous.
Behind the walls, Misha’s big heart and small size allow him to sneak and squeeze through the two brick openings in the wall to smuggle food. Misha never feels doubt and is always willing to help his friends and family.
I undoubtedly and truly loved this book even though sometimes it can be a bit harsh. I really think you should read this breathtaking and mind- blowing novel. I recommend this book for ages 12 and up
